The United States is one of the largest consumers of chocolates in all its varieties. In this article, we present a quick overview of the chocolate market in the US by analyzing data collected from various supermarkets and online platforms.
Based on 322,206 data points collected in recent months and updated as of April 24, 2023, a total of 3,769 SKUs of chocolates from 17 different countries are currently being sold in the US. We have data on 157 importers, 126 brands sold in 160 of the most important brick-and-mortar retailers, as well as online platforms such as Aldi, Costco, Walmart, Amazon, Brooklyn-fare, Tops-Market, and others in cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Cook.

Chocolate Market Analysis, the Brand Analysis:
When focusing on brands offering milk chocolate products, it is noted that they originate from 14 different countries, with Switzerland, Belgium, and the US being the top three countries with the most brands and SKUs. Products sold in 100g formats are the best-selling, and the median price for milk chocolate SKUs has increased by 10% since the end of December, based on the average of all supermarkets and online platforms in all cities analyzed in the US.
Offline Analysis:
In New York, we analyzed 75 retailers, including Bravo-Supermarkets, Costco, Dumbo Market, Shop-Fair-Supermarket, Cityacresmarket, Tops-Markets, Lincoln-Market, and Wegmans. We found that Swiss-origin brands are more expensive than those of US origin, while Spanish chocolate brands compete on price, and Italian chocolate products compete on brand. We also found that products originating in Poland or Romania showed very variable prices over the last 12 months, closing this quarter with strong increases that doubled the median price.
In Los Angeles, we found 19 retailers that sell milk chocolate SKUs of 100g, including Aldi, Eataly, Fresco-Community-Market, Lindt-Sprungli, Valley-Marketplace, and Walmart. Ritter Sport and Milka are the leading brands in terms of the number of milk chocolate SKUs sold in the market, far ahead of others such as Venchi, Lindt, or Ferrero Roche.
In Miami, retailers such as Milams sell these formats for around $4, while The-Fresh-Market offers more SKUs and a variety of prices ranging from $1 to $3.
Online Analysis:
Walmart is one of the major online platforms selling chocolate with milk SKUs in the US. It primarily offers products originating from Germany, Switzerland, and the US. The prices for milk chocolate SKUs in 100g format start from $1.
